Il riccio di mare……. pericoloso se ti punge, d’altronde ottimo solo la femmina per condire gli spaghetti.
La femmina la riconosci facilmente perché solo lei si “trucca” si fa “notare” si fa “bella” mettendosi addosso, le pietruzze, i granelli di sabbia, di corallo…… riesce ad infilarseli alla radice, dove nascono gli affascinanti aculei.
Sui fondali marini sabbiosi o rocciosi, quando troviamo questo “animale”, è sintomo di mare pulito, non inquinato, cristallino……una garanzia anche se in alcuni casi “fastidiosa-insidiosa” per fare il bagno. Quando muore il riccio, perde tutti gli aculei diventa grigio, tempestato di micro forellini in linea perfetti…..sedi degli “spilloni”, ma la forma, il guscio, cattura ancora il desiderio di tenerlo in mano, e di usarlo a volte come oggetto decorativo da tenere in casa….continua….quindi a esercitare fascino e curiosità.
Ed’è questa curiosità, questo fascino che mi ha suggerito l’ispirazione di usare i led per imitare le sedi spoglie degli aculei del riccio. Dal greco riccio di mare: echinos, ekinos,.
Quindi la “lista della spesa” fu: raggi di alluminio curvati, che ricordano le raggiere scheletriche del riccio, argentee calcaree, rivestite con strisce flessibili di led, l’arancio del metacrilato termoformato, che ricorda l’interno del mollusco, utilizzato per assemblare gli steli….e poi tutto appare con un disegno, i raggi, un corpo globoso, trasparente e luminoso…..la sospensione oscillante che bascula sul suo centro….come se… come se mosso da correnti marine sotterranee….si appoggiasse all’aria. Ed’è tutto…. E ti accorgi che la ripetizione ossessiva dei diamanti di luce, annulla come in un mantra il fastidio ottico che può dare un solo led…. un solo led inguardabile pungiglione nell’occhio….molti led….molti aculei a lui servono a camminare a muoversi, ma se lo prendi delicatamente e lo appoggi sulla tua mano ti accarezzano e solleticano… un massaggio alla pelle e al cuore.

The sea urchin ……. dangerous if it stings you, on the other hand the female is excellent as a seasoning for spaghetti.
It is easy to recognise the female as it ‘dresses up’ to get noticed, wears ‘make-up’ consisting of stones, grains of sand, coral…… which it manages to slip around the root where those fascinating prickles spring from.
Wherever this ‘animal’ is found on rocky and sandy sea floors, it indicates that the water is clean and unpolluted, crystalline …… this is reassuring, though in some cases it might make bathing a bit tricky .. When the sea urchin dies, it loses all its prickles and turns grey, covered with tiny holes in perfect lines….. one hole for each prickle, but the shape, the husk, still makes you wish to hold it in your hand, and sometimes to use it as a decoration for your home ….so it continues to fascinate and awaken curiosity.
And it was this curiosity and fascination that inspired me to use Leds to imitate the empty holes that held the sea urchin’s prickles. The Greek name for the sea urchin is echinos, or ekinos.
I therefore had a ‘shopping list’ of ingredients: curved aluminium spokes, imitating the radial skeletal frame of the sea urchin, chalky-silvery, covered with flexible strips of Leds, with the orange of the heat-formed methacrylate imitating the inside of the mollusc on which the stems are assembled …. then it all starts to show the original design, with curved spokes, globular shaped body, transparent and luminous….. oscillating pendant swinging from its base ….as if swayed by marine currents under the earth …. and supported by air. End of list …. And you notice the haunting repetition of the diamond lights, like a mantra soothing away the visual discomfort that you can get from a single Led…. a Led you can’t look at because it’s like a sting in the eye ….numerous Leds…. like the numerous prickles that help the sea urchin move and walk, but if you pick it up gently and place it on your hand, it caresses and tickles … like a massage for the skin and even the heart.
